Silver Devil - Follow Me Down

Silver Devil is a Swedish Stoner band, founded in 2005 and now based in Gävle. It all started with a few guys who had a common interest in Stoner Music. About a month after the band had started playing together, they made their first gig at a local pub in Söderhamn. With a set list mixed with covers and their own songs, the evening a success. After the amazing response Silver Devil got from their first gig, the band decided to try to go all the way. The result was a mass migration to Gävle where fresh new rehearsal rooms and venues waited. In 2010 was guitarist Jonas Hamqvist recruited to the band and the Stoner/Doom/Metal drink was mixed, finished and ready for serving. This Devil is not only made of silver, it's a package of well wrapped wilderness fuzz. The music is incredibly well built in its simplicity, no unnecessary space frills or contrived excursions, this is more like Lego, the pieces fall into place immediately. The album is covered by heavy and fuzzy soundscapes with great riffings that wont keep your feet's in place (:

If you haven't heard this band before visit them on MySpace or check their tunes on Spotify or check the video below, you won't regret it!

Sleep - Dragonaut

One of the world's heaviest bands visit Fritz's Corner Strand on 6th May! Titled as the ultimate stoner band now they are back and better than ever. After the magical reunion gigs including All Tomorrow's Parties, now SLEEP will play for the first time in Sweden! Take the opportunity to buy tickets before they run out. Buy here!

Sleep was formed from the San Jose band Asbestosdeath when they changed their musical direction and the release of their debut album "Volume One" in the early nineties. After Justin Marler left the band went on Al Cisneros, Matt Pike and Chris Hakius into the studio and recorded a demo which they sent to Earache Records. The recording was released just as it was called "Sleep's Holy Mountain", and the album is now regarded as one of the most prominent and influential metal albums ever.

"Sleep's Holy Mountain" created with enough waves so that major-label London Records-designed band. The trio went again into the studio together and recorded a 63-minute tribute to the grass - "Dopesmoker". Because the disc is comprised of a song, pretty radio friendly format, the company refused for the disc. Sleep shortened the song to 52 minutes, and renamed it to "Jerusalem" but London Records, the disc on the shelf and said the contract with the band. Which in turn led to the band sadly closed down completely. The members went further, however, and Matt Pike formed High on Fire while Al Cisneros and Chris Haikus started OM.

"Jerusalem" was finally released through The Music Cartel and Rise Above in the late nineties and "Dopesmoker" was released in 2003 by Tee Pee Records.

Sleep now consists of Al Cisneros, Matt Pike and Jason Roeder.

Todays tune "Dragonaut" is taken from the second studio album "Holy Mountain". It was released in November 1992.

The Graviators - Druid's Ritual

The Club "Püssy a Go Go" stood for last weekend's club night at Debaser, Slussen here in Stockholm. Offered a delicious cream cake of three bands, as Asteroid (which you could read here on the blog earlier this week), The Graviators (today's tune) and Abramis Brama (Tomorrow).

Asteroid, a band that I thought sounded pretty okay, a real old school jam band with the 70´s century characters. However, I was a little surprised by The Graviators performance, a band that I actually had looked forward to see and they behaved really well live. Was a little disappointed when my favorite tune "Roller" from the album was not played live. But at large it was really, really good, great classic hard rock with a little stoner feeling. I have their debut album on the shelves which I like alot, a record which has one of the year's most beautiful cover design. I purchased their latest 12' split single that they have done with Brutus, a long and intimate tune.

The Graviators was formed deep in the woods of southern Sweden in 2009, with a vision to write and record music inspired by the sounds of the great rock ‘n’ roll groups of the 70's. With a mix of heavy, yet melodic riffs, that will take you on a trip back in time, when bands like Black Sabbath and Pentagram took heavy rock to new heights, The Graviators caught the ear of Swedish label Transubstans who signed them in early 2009. On December 11th, The Graviators self titled debut hit the stores. Their first music video, for the song Back to the Sabbath, was shot by renowned music video director Thomas Tjäder who have made videos for In Flames and At The Gates. The band was featured with the track The Magician, which also appeared on the vinyl release, on the Planet Fuzz compilation Cowbells & Cobwebs.

In 2010 Dutch label Clear Spot/ Headspin records released the album as an exclusive double splatter vinyl. The artwork for this vinyl release (and the 2nd press of the album on CD) was made by the incredible artist Vance Kelly.

In December 2010 they had the great honor of supporting the American doom legends Saint Vitus on their European tour, which took the bands through eight countries.
2011 will see the release of a vinyl split with label mates Brutus, a 14-minute epic called Druid’s Ritual. On the 16th september 2011 The Graviators enterd the studio in Malmö. And record like in the good old days (Analog recording) And hopefully mixing and mastering we'll be finished November/December. Music video we'll be out to. The album we'll be out February next year.

Here is some pictures from the gig:

Todays tune "Druid's Ritual" is taken from the 12' split featuring Norwegian/Swedish 70's hard rockers Brutus and the Swedish cornerstone of doom; The Graviators.

Hong Faux - Feign Death to Stay Alive

Here is the first taste of the upcoming debut album "The Crown that Wears the Head" with Hong Faux.

The new single “Feign Death to Stay Alive” will be released on October 25, but already today you can see the music video for it here on Tune Of The Day. The song is a really driven thing with really nice messy melody, song hooks after a few laps, expressed clearly and committed, the lyric is well composed and very ingenious, just take these lines "TV bleeding like a whore, hungry leaches screams for more" I have in principle, humming on this all day, really looking forward to the album.

The recordings of the new album has been down on tape, the real old school tape recording. The new record will contain around seven (maybe eight) tracks. Release date will be in early November.  The album will be released on Vinyl and in all the digital stores. The pre-orders for the Vinyl starts on Friday, October 21. I will of course pre-order a Vinyl and i hope you will.

Album Artwork
The artwork for the single and album is designed by Mathew Bethncourt.

They also have a plan is to release album no 2 within 9 months or so. Some of the songs from these sessions might show up on the next full length, and a track or two will probably end up on a special tour edition 7″.

Here is some photos from the recording sessions.

Saviours - Crete’n

Saviours is an American rock, stoner metal band. The band was formed in 2004 in Oakland, California. Since then, they have released four full-length albums and few EPs.

The Californian quartet shuffles around in a not-quite-fixed-land by releasing a record that fingers little here and there. Death Procession feels rather comfortable in my ears and this sounds like a bearded mix of sludgy thrash and sweet Stoner and that becomes a thickened riff experience. To my somewhat limited access to their previous works makes my curiosity is growing and realizing that I had to check up on their earlier records. The new album is also released on Vinyl. It Should be noted That the vinyl of Death's Procession Have Embossed covers for The First Run.

Their words about new album:

The main influence on their latest album is Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Thin Lizzy. The whole record is a trek through Earth’s demise which everyone contributes to, oblivious or not. It’s a procession toward death. The world has gone insane. Humans have become apathetic, greedy, self-centered, over-medicated, delusional parasites in a filthy, drained and deflated world. It’s hopeless now, too far gone. Now we wait. That’s what this record is about. Earth’s possession and death’s procession.

Death’s Procession was recorded by Phil Manley (of Trans Am and The Fucking Champs) at Lucky Cat in San Francisco.

The band consists of:
Austin Barber - vocals, lead & rhythm guitar
Sonny Christopher Reinhardt - lead & rhythm guitar
Cyrus Comiskey (Black Fork, Drunk Horse) - bass
Scott Batiste - drums

The band is on tour currently and lands in Sweden in late October for three dates, Gothenburg, Stockholm and Linkoping. See rest of the tour below.

Christoffer Röstlund Jonsson wrote a review of the new record in the Metro newspaper, read it here!

Switch Opens - Express Death

Switch Opens from Stockholm, Sweden started out in 2000 as Fingerspitzengefühl. They made two albums for Kooljunk Communications, “Fingerspitzengefühl” in 2004 and “Happy Doomsday” in 2006, and decided to continue as Switch Opens in 2008. The band has done extensive gigging on their own, but also supported bands such as Neurosis, Scars On Broadway and Entombed. The band has earned a reputation as an adrenalized live act, crushing everything in their way. Switch Opens signed to GMR Music Group in October 2008 and the self-titled record was released in Scandinavia in September 2009 and in the rest of Europe in the end of October. In January 2010, the album won P3 Guld, the Swedish national radio music awards, in the Rock/Metal category. In May 2011, the band changed label once again. A new album is scheduled for release early 2012 on Transubstans Records.

Wooden Shjips - Lazy Bones

San Francisco native, Wooden Shjips, the leading peddlers of psych, takes us on a little evening stroll on the U.S. west coast with the appropriate title of the new album, West. After being around for more than five years, Wooden Shjips is finally releasing their first studio-recorded full-length, but it's the third one in order. The record is a metaphorical journey steeped in 60's and 70's psychedelic rock, with long, melodic guitar tunes and vague song that faithful Wooden Shjips beings. This is at times wonderfully minimalist monotone which for some reason turns me on.

One of my favorite songs on the album, which also is today's Tune Of The Day, "Lazy Bones", transporting the listener into the California coast, somewhere between Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, near Malibu, a pleasant place, where I follow the coast road, Pacific Coast Highway, climbing up the hillsides in Santa Monica and Malibu Canyon and I feel that here is not a worry in the world. The rest of the album follows the same line where it is easy to daydream, to transport out of their reality and into the hot desert.

Todays tune "Lazy Bones" from Wooden Shjips latest effort "West"

Wooden Shjips guitarist Ripley Johnson also plays in a side project, Moon Duo, formed in 2009 with Sanae Yamada. They have so far released one EP (Killing Time, 2009, on Sacred Bones) and two albums (Escape, 2010, on Woodsist; Mazes, 2011, on Sacred Bones)
