Yusuf Islam - Father & Son

Yusuf Islam originally and commonly known by his former artist name Cat Stevens. Is an English singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, educator, philanthropist, convert to Islam. On April 1, 2011, Yusuf launched a new tour website (yusufinconcert.com) to commemorate his first European tour in over 36 years scheduled from May 7 to June 2, 2011. The ten-date tour will visit Germany, France, Austria & Belgium and cities such as Stockholm, Hamburg, Oberhausen, Berlin, Munich, Rotterdam, Paris, Mannheim, Vienna and Brussels.

Steven Georgiou, born in 21 July 1948, Marylebone, London, England), was the third child of a Greek-Cypriot father, Stavros Georgiou (b. 1900), and a Swedish mother, Ingrid Wickman (b. 1915). He actually lived in Gävle, Sweden until he was eight years old, and attended a local school for six months. He has an older sister, Anita, and brother, David. The family lived above Moulin Rouge, the restaurant that his parents operated, on the north end of Shaftesbury Avenue, a short walk from Piccadilly Circus in the Soho theatre district of London. All family members worked in the restaurant. His parents divorced when he was about 8 years old, but they continued to maintain the family restaurant and live above it.

Songs such as ‘Matthew and Son’ and ‘I Love My Dog’ gained attention internationally, and within a year he was on tour with Jimi Hendrix, arguing over which of them would close the sets each night. Over the next three years he took the world by storm with the multi-platinum albums ‘Tea for the Tillerman', 'Teaser and the Firecat', and 'Catch a Bull at Four’. These included such classic songs as ‘Peace Train’, ‘Morning Has Broken’, and ‘Father and Son', helping make Stevens into the voice of a generation.

Stevens converted to Islam in December 1977 and adopted his Muslim name, Yusuf Islam, the following year. In 1979, he auctioned all his guitars for charity and left his music career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. Yusuf married Fauzia Mubarak Ali on 7 September 1979. He has been given several awards for his work in promoting peace in the world, including 2003's World Award, the 2004 Man for Peace Award, and the 2007 Mediterranean Prize for Peace. In 2006, he returned to pop music with his first album of new pop songs in 28 years, entitled An Other Cup. He now goes professionally by the single name Yusuf. His newest album, Roadsinger, was released on 5 May 2009.

At first glance, one may wonder why Yusuf, would choose the Swedish capital to launch a comeback after more than three decades. As it turns out, however, Yusuf has had a long relationship with Sweden on account of his mother, who is born in the town of Gävle, located about 150 kilometres north of Stockholm in eastern Sweden.

Well the first idea was to kick off in Denmark with a few days of rehearsals but it got changed and Sweden was the next option. Yusuf and his band arrived few days before the show day to get a chance to go thru everything, you know, to get a feeling of all the songs and tune all the gears for the tour. The set up was done on thursday 5th of May. First soundcheck was done the same afternoon took around 6 hrs and continued the following day on friday for almost the hole day/evening. I was very busy during these days so I have no pictures from the rehearsals, but it sounded very good the little I heard.

The fact that the show was sold out was expected, Yusuf made a visit to Skvalan (Swedish talk show) which made the tickets ran out the day after. I can not remember when I saw that the stage was so far back in the end as this.

Yusuf did a really good show, the voice sounded very good, although he is a bit older, maybe sometimes a bit soft-hearted and not like old times but he delivers what he should, mixing new with old, see set list below, then you will understand what I mean.

Here is some pictures that i took during the show.

Todays tune "Father and Son" is a very popular tune written and performed by Yusuf Islam (then known as Cat Stevens) on his 1970 album "Tea for the Tillerman”.

The song frames an exchange between a father that not understands a son's desire to break away and shape a new life, and the son who cannot really explain himself but knows that it is time for him to seek his own destiny. To echo this, Stevens sings in a deeper register for the father's lines, while using a higher, more emotive one for those of the son. Additionally, there are backing vocals provided by Stevens' guitarist and friend, Alun Davies, singing an unusual chorus of simple words, and sentences such as, "No", "Why must you go and make this decision?", beginning mid-song, so softly, they are only perceptible with a slight increase in volume towards the end of the song.

Roger Waters - Comfortably Numb

Roger Waters and his HUGE Wall was in the Stockholm Globe on the 11th and 12th May.

A biggish production, we did the load in on Wednesday morning begun 05.00am and I think we were ready around 1.30pm or at least most of us went home.

The stage was parted in 2 sets with 2 drum sets and 2 keyboard sets. One b4 and under the building of the wall and one in the high back. They had a mid construction that could go up and down in order to place the bricks in place and to run up the singer and guitar guy up above the wall. The bricks were made of cardboard. My friend were up there and she nearly broke the wall when she bended down a bit...haha.

Another friend of mine had her son among the kids that were singing there, they did a great job!

The gig was amazing with all these amazing videos and thingies that kept coming down from the rig, schoolmaster etc... They had 15 projectors up over the audience to cover it all.

Ah well it was awesome, and soo damn hard, my t-shirt was all wet :)

The Wall tour opened 15 September 2010 in Toronto, and moved through North America before ending the first leg of the tour in Mexico City, 21 December 2010. The world tour will include Europe, starting 21 March 2011 in Lisbon, Portugal, and tentatively ending 8 July 2011, in Athens, Greece Waters has expressed wishes to visit other areas with the show after the European leg, but as of yet nothing has been announced. A total of 118 gigs...

We took some pics on the show that we wanted to share.

Sufjan Stevens - Futile Devices

Sufjan Stevens is an American singer-songwriter and musician born in Detroit, Michigan. Stevens first began releasing his music on Asthmatic Kitty, a label co-founded with his stepfather, beginning with the 1999 release, A Sun Came. He is best known for his 2005 album, Illinois, which hit number one in the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart, and for the song "Chicago”.

Stevens has released albums of varying styles, from the electronica of Enjoy Your Rabbit and the lo-fi folk of Seven Swans to the symphonic instrumentation of Illinois and Christmas-themed Songs for Christmas. Stevens makes use of a variety of instruments, often playing many of them himself on the same recording, and writes music in various time signatures. He is considered part of the folk revival in indie pop, but his influences are very broad. His music has been likened to electronica and aesthetically compared to the minimalism of Steve Reich. Stevens' music originally contained spiritual elements; many songs (most notably on Seven Swans) draw their inspiration from Bible stories and themes. Recently, he has made a notable shift away from religious elements once present in his music, and has made several songs that distance himself considerably from the Christian religion, as present on 2010 albums All Delighted People EP and The Age of Adz.

The latest album "The Age of Adz” was released on October 12, 2010 by Asthmatic Kitty Records. It is Stevens' first song-based full length album in five years, since the release of Illinois in 2005. The album features a heavy use of electronics augmented by heavy orchestration, and takes inspiration from the apocalyptic artwork of schizophrenic artist Royal Robertson

In interviews, Stevens has stated that in 2009–2010 he suffered from a mysterious debilitating viral infection that affected his nervous system. He experienced chronic pain, and was forced to stop working on music for several months. He said: "The Age of Adz, is, in some ways, a result of that process of working through health issues and getting much more in touch with my physical self. That's why I think the record's really obsessed with sensation and has a hysterical melodrama to it.”

Sufjan Stevens is out on tour atm and did a visit to the Circus, Stockholm, Sweden yesterday. I must say, A really big production for such a small place as Circus, lots of gadgets and effects did they bring on at this trip. A big band crew with double drummers and a few dancers. The show was very electronic and did a high-impact, very entertainment. Part of the show was very psychedelic with UV light glowing in the dark moving to the beats and used projections of the artist Royal Robertson's (1936-1997) works, very nice effect.

That this is a real ”Stevens” week is actually pretty fun. Sufjan Stevens yesterday, Roger Stevens today and tomorrow, he is doing a double gig at the Globe, on the same day does Arctic Stevens a gig at Circus, on Friday do The Queen of the Stevens plays at Circus and Rush Stevens at Globe and finally Cat Stevens on Saturday.
